Boxing gloves for bag work, pads and sparring
Boxing gloves provide cushioning around the hands and support at the wrists, depending on their design and fit. Whether you practise on a punch bag, pads or with a partner, choose gloves suited to the activity and comfortable to wear with your hand wraps.
Discover boxing gloves for different types of training, including bag work, pad drills and sparring. Compare the intended use, glove weight, internal fit and closure rather than choosing solely by experience level or bodyweight.
Which boxing gloves do you need?
Start with the type of training you plan to do. Boxing glove weight is usually stated in ounces (oz), but this is not a universal hand-size measurement or a guarantee of cushioning. Padding construction, shape and fit also matter. Check the manufacturer’s guidance and your club’s requirements before choosing.
Gloves for bag work and pad training
For punch bags and pads, choose gloves intended for repeated striking against training equipment. A lighter glove can feel more responsive, but it is not automatically the right choice for every boxer. Look for suitable padding, a secure closure and a fit that lets you form a fist comfortably with your wraps on.
Sparring gloves and cushioning
Sparring requires gloves designed and approved for that use, with suitable padding for contact with a partner. Clubs often specify a minimum glove weight, but a higher ounce rating alone does not make a glove suitable for sparring. Follow your coach’s guidance and avoid using gloves with worn, compressed or damaged padding.
Choosing glove weight and fit
Common weight labels include 10 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz and 16 oz. The right choice depends on the model, training type, bodyweight and club rules. Check the manufacturer’s size guidance as well: gloves with the same ounce rating can fit differently. Your hand should sit securely without uncomfortable pressure, with room for wraps and a supportive wrist closure.
