Pull-ups and chin-ups for upper-body strength

These pulling exercises involve the latissimus dorsi and other back muscles, the biceps and muscles that control the shoulders and trunk. Pull-ups commonly use an overhand grip, while chin-ups use an underhand grip. Grip and technique influence how the movement feels and how the effort is distributed.

Different grip positions

Depending on the model, you can choose wide, narrow or neutral grips, with palms facing each other for a neutral grip. Not every bar offers all these options. Compare grip spacing, handle diameter and surface finish, and choose positions that allow controlled movement and a comfortable range of motion.

Pull-up bars for home gyms and training spaces

A wall-mounted bar leaves the floor clear but needs a suitable load-bearing wall and correct installation. Check the required fixings, wall clearance, ceiling height and space for your full movement. For multiple stations, allow adequate space between users. Follow the manufacturer’s load limits and permitted use; dynamic movements or added weight require explicit suitability.

Combine with other bodyweight exercises

Combine pull-ups with push-ups and dips on suitable separate equipment to build a varied upper-body routine. Hanging knee or leg raises may also be possible if the bar and installation are designed for them and there is enough clearance. Start with controlled exercises and add movements only when you can maintain your grip and body position.
