What is a slam ball?

A slam ball is a sturdy weighted ball designed for repeated floor throws. Its flexible exterior and filling absorb much of the impact, limiting the rebound. This lets you pick the ball up again and prepare for the next repetition. Bounce and movement after landing can vary by model and surface.

How does a slam ball differ from a medicine ball?

A slam ball is primarily intended for powerful floor throws. Medicine balls are commonly used for strength, rotational and partner exercises and may bounce more, depending on the model. Wall balls are usually larger and softer and are designed for controlled throws against a suitable wall. Only use a training ball for activities explicitly permitted for that model.

Which slam ball weight do you need?

Choose a weight that lets you perform every repetition powerfully while maintaining control and good technique. Lighter balls suit a faster pace, longer intervals and learning the movement. Heavier models require more strength and may suit experienced users or exercises with fewer repetitions. Start with a manageable weight and increase it gradually.

Which exercises can you do with a slam ball?

The best-known exercise is the overhead slam: raise the ball above your head and throw it forcefully onto a suitable floor in front of you. You can also use it for squat-to-slams, ground-to-shoulder movements, carries and core exercises. Combining movements in short intervals brings strength training and intensive conditioning into the same workout.

Choosing the diameter and grip

Diameter and surface texture affect how a slam ball feels in your hands. Balls with the same diameter across different weights let you change the load while keeping a similar grip. This varies between ranges, so check each model’s dimensions and surface. Choose a size you can hold securely and move with control.

Training safely with a slam ball

Use a level, firm training floor suitable for repeated impacts, and leave plenty of clear space. Never throw towards another person. Keep your feet clear of the landing area and allow for unexpected bounce or rolling. Inspect the ball regularly for splits, leaks or damaged seams where present. Stop using it if the exterior is damaged and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
