V-belts and drive belts for fitness equipment

A V-belt or drive belt transfers movement between different shafts and drive pulleys within fitness equipment. Here you can find ribbed Poly-V belts in a range of lengths and versions. Always compare the full belt code, profile and number of ribs with the existing drive belt before ordering.

What does a V-belt do in fitness equipment?

The V-belt forms part of the fitness machine’s mechanical drive system. It transfers movement from the bottom bracket axle to the flywheel or another drive pulley, for example. A correctly fitting and properly tensioned drive belt provides even power transmission.

V-belt or Poly-V belt?

Many fitness machines use a Poly-V belt with several ribs that run in the grooves of the drive pulleys. In practice, it is often simply called a V-belt or drive belt. The rib count, profile and length must match the machine’s drive system.

How do you find the right drive belt?

The outside of the old belt often carries a code specifying details such as profile and size. Designations such as J, PJ, K or L are not necessarily interchangeable. Check the full marking and count the ribs too. Also compare the fitness machine’s brand and model with the product information.

Can you measure a used V-belt?

Measuring can help if the belt code is no longer readable, but a used drive belt may be stretched or deformed. Comparing only the circumference is therefore not always enough. Check the width, rib profile and rib count too. A part number from the manual or exploded diagram provides greater certainty.

When should you replace a V-belt?

Signs of wear include cracks, frayed edges, missing ribs or a smooth, hardened surface. Slipping, squeaking, jerking or an uneven drive may also indicate a worn or incorrectly tensioned belt. Check the alignment and condition of the drive pulleys too.

Are V-belts universal?

V-belts are not automatically universal. Two belts with a similar circumference may differ in profile, width, stretch and rib count. Do not order solely by length or appearance. Where possible, use the exact same belt code or a replacement with confirmed suitability.

Replacing a drive belt safely

Switch electrical fitness equipment off and unplug it from the mains before opening the housing. Record how the existing belt runs over the drive pulleys and check alignment and tension after installation. A loose belt may slip, while an excessively tight belt can place extra strain on bearings and shafts.
