What is a balance trainer?

A balance trainer creates an unstable surface on which you make small corrections to stay balanced. This engages stabilising muscles alongside those performing the movement. Balance work can be a separate session, part of a warm-up or a complement to strength and sports training.

Balance board or balance dome?

A balance board is a board or disc that tilts around a pivot point. It mainly suits standing balance exercises and body-control drills. A balance dome has an inflatable dome and offers options such as squats, lunges, planks and push-ups where the model permits them. Choose according to your goals and experience.

Training with a BOSU balance trainer

A BOSU trainer combines an inflatable dome with a firm platform. Dome-side-up exercises use a yielding, unstable surface. Some exercises use the platform side, but permitted positions and movements depend on the model. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and do not assume that standing on an inverted platform is suitable for every trainer.

Which type of balance trainer should you choose?

Compare surface firmness, stability, grip and intended use. For home training, ease of use and storage may be priorities. Frequent use in a studio calls for durability and an appropriate usage rating. A firmer surface or a larger range of movement changes the training experience; it is not automatically the best choice. Select a model that suits your control and the exercises you plan to perform.

What can you use balance training for?

Balance training practises controlled movement and maintaining posture during exercises. This can be useful in fitness, running, winter sports, board sports and other activities where balance and body control matter. You can progress by increasing movement depth, using one leg or adding exercises, provided the equipment and your ability allow it.

What should you check before buying?

Consider the training surface, maximum user load, diameter and available space. Beginners generally benefit from a more stable, predictable model, while experienced users may choose greater movement or a more dynamic surface. Check that the product is designed for your intended training intensity and frequency.

Getting started safely

Place the trainer on a level, clear surface and begin with simple exercises. Keep a wall or sturdy support within reach if needed. Increase difficulty only when you control the movement well, and follow the manufacturer's usage instructions.
