Boxing training for strength and fitness

Practising punches and combinations brings technique, coordination and conditioning together. Bag work and pad drills let you vary pace, duration and intensity. Start with controlled movements and build up the demands as your technique develops.

Boxing gloves for bag work and sparring

Boxing gloves provide padding around the hands and support around the wrists, depending on their design and fit. Not every glove is suitable for both bag work and sparring. Compare the intended use, padding, closure and glove weight, usually stated in ounces (oz). For sparring, follow your coach’s guidance and your club’s equipment requirements.

Punch bags for boxing practice

A punch bag lets you practise punching technique, combinations and sustained effort. Compare the bag’s weight, size, filling and intended use. Hanging bags require a suitable mounting system and supporting structure. Allow enough room around the bag for movement and check whether the model is also designed for kicks.

Kick pads and focus pads for technique drills

Training with a partner or coach allows you to practise combinations, timing and accuracy. Focus pads and larger kick pads differ in shape, padding and intended use. Choose pads suited to the strikes being practised and agree on the drill and intensity with the person holding them.

Protective equipment for training

Mouthguards and other protective equipment should match the activity and fit properly. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and your club’s requirements, especially for partner drills and sparring. Protective equipment does not remove all risk: controlled technique, appropriate intensity and supervision remain important.
