Half racks for barbell strength training
A half rack provides supports for barbell exercises such as squats, bench presses and shoulder presses. Its open design gives you room to move in front of the frame. Explore half racks, squat racks and folding wall racks for home gyms and professional training spaces.
What is a half rack?
A half rack is an open rack where you usually train in front of the uprights, rather than inside a full cage. Adjustable J-hooks hold the bar before and after a set. Safety arms, where fitted and approved for the exercise, can support the bar if you cannot complete a repetition. These have separate load limits and must be positioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
For squats, bench presses and more
Depending on the model and configuration, you can use a half rack for squats, presses, rack pulls and other barbell exercises. A compatible weight bench adds options for seated or lying exercises. Some racks accept dip bars, landmine attachments or cable attachments. Check which accessories and exercises the manufacturer permits.
Half rack, squat stand or power rack?
A half rack offers an open training area, while a power rack surrounds the lifting area with a full frame. Squat stands vary from separate supports to connected frames. Stability, footprint and protection depend on the individual design, anchoring and safety equipment, rather than the category name alone. Compare the full space required for the rack, barbell and exercise movement.
What should you check when choosing a half rack?
Compare frame construction, load limits for the rack and its attachments, adjustment spacing and accessory compatibility. A folding wall rack can save space when stored, but needs a suitable wall and the specified fixings. For barbells, check that the distance between the inner sleeve collars fits across the J-hooks. Olympic barbells (50 mm) have 50 mm loading sleeves; this measurement alone does not confirm that the bar fits the rack.
For home gyms and professional use
For a home gym, consider available floor space, ceiling height and clearance for loading plates. In a gym or personal-training studio, choose a model rated for frequent professional use. Follow the anchoring instructions and check which J-hooks, safety arms and accessories are included. Barbells, weight plates and benches are included only when explicitly stated.
