Plyo boxes for jump and strength training

A plyo box provides a raised platform for jump training and other strength exercises. Use it for box jumps, step-ups or box squats where the model permits. Choose exercises and a height suited to your experience, control and training goals.

Explore steel plyo boxes and wooden 3-in-1 designs that offer different heights by turning the box. The available heights and working surfaces vary by model, so compare the dimensions and intended use before choosing.

What is a plyo box?

A plyo box is a sturdy platform used for exercises including plyometric jump training. Plyometric exercises involve rapid movements that develop explosive power. A box can also be used for controlled strength exercises: step-ups and box squats do not have to involve jumping.

Popular plyo box exercises

For a box jump, you jump from the floor and land on the platform. Other options include step-ups, box squats and push-ups with the hands or feet elevated, depending on the box’s design. Select a height that allows controlled execution and, for jumps, a stable landing. A higher box is not automatically a better training choice.

Wooden and steel plyo boxes

Wooden 3-in-1 boxes provide different heights when placed on their designated faces. Turning the box also changes the dimensions of the top surface. Steel models often have a fixed height and a textured or non-slip platform. Check the actual heights, platform size, base stability and load rating; material alone does not determine suitability.

For strength and functional training

Plyo boxes can be used in home gyms, studios and professional training spaces. Beginners can start with suitable low step-ups or introductory drills, while more demanding jumps require appropriate technique and control. Use a level, stable surface, leave clear space around and above the box, and follow its assembly and use instructions. Check that the model is rated for the exercise and expected usage level.
